The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine is Hiring a Remote Neuropathologist

Overview

Join the HJF Team!

HJF is seeking a Neuropathologist to provide scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the identified program. This position may provide direction for the execution of research programs and may have a role as a Senior PI, site lead, or an Associate Professor position in academia.

This position will be in support of DoD/USU Brain Tissue Repository and Neuropathology Research Program of the Uniformed Services Universtiy of the Health Sciences located at the Rockledge in Bethesda, MD.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Responsibilities

  • Performs neuropathology diagnostic evaluation of assigned Brain Tissue Repository (BTR) cases and generates a proper neuropathologic diagnostic report.
  • Formulates experimental hypotheses; designs and implements experimental neuropathology protocols, with special emphasis on traumatic brain injury and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). 
  • Develops necessary new technologies and protocols to advance the neuropathology research.
  • Collects, processes and interprets experimental data, including post-mortem human brain tissue.
  • Trains technical staff and junior level staff scientists.
  • Provides collaborative assistance to other Research Scientists that require the incumbent's expertise.
  • Designs, directs, and participates in clinical research protocols in conjunction with research physicians and scientists.
  • Monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of the related neuropathology research program.
  • Analyzes clinical data. Prepares program status reports to the institution, regulatory agencies, and sponsors of the clinical research programs scientific papers for presentation at local and national meetings and for publication in medical and scientific periodicals.
  • May include budgetary responsibility to include plan/forecast, prepare, approve, monitor. Assists in securing funding for the research initiatives within the Program (writing proposals, etc.)
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Physical Capabilities 

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral degree - MD 
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required 

Licenses and Certifications 

  • Licensure to practice medicine within the continental United States; Board certified or board eligible for certification in the specialty associated with the clinical research program.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Expertise in clinical neuropathology required.
  • Bright field microscopy, expert knowledge of histological stains and complex staining methods; detailed knowledge of immunohistochemical techniques.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Knowledge of biological processes and ability to integrate this knowledge with histopathology expertise.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical medicine and the procedures and techniques necessary for performing research tasks.
  • Knowledge of medical science and the development of research programs.
  • Ability to make effective presentations and publish.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Security Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust Investigation.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
